Two reasons why the icon argument for Wellywood doesn’t stack up
1. “For many regions in New Zealand, innovative icons such as buildings, sculptures, signs and natural features help showcase what is unique” “Attracting people to particular regions requires a range of marketing solutions; for many, an identifiable landmark is a useful element of the overall marketing mix.”
Wellington has plenty of sources to draw on for icons and doesn’t really need any more. There’s the current and obvious, the Beehive, the cable car, the fountain in Oriental Parade, the sculpture across from The Embassy Theatre, to name a few. How is the “Wellywood” sign any different/better?
2. “Attracting people to particular regions requires a range of marketing solutions; for many, an identifiable landmark is a useful element of the overall marketing mix.”
Cute. But by having the sign right by the airport, there is no incentive for people to seek it out and discover the other cool stuff about Wellington along the way. They can hop right on that ferry to Picton to begin their South Island adventure of wonderment and lack of tacky signs.
